[18:06] Dnate Mars: dual boot all the way
[18:07] Moon Adamant: hello Pallmor :9
[18:07] Pallmor Bergman: hi
[18:07] Rubaiyat Shatner: it is okay Mune
[18:07] Jon Seattle: Hello Pallmor
[18:07] Moon Adamant: lol
[18:07] Yogeswari Padar: they will do that - apple replaced the motherboard, hard drive and one ram module in my G3iBook last year (it was still under warranty)... it's like i have a new machine... can't run SL on it, but it's great for other things
[18:07] Jon Seattle: Okay, let me start with a few remarks, and then we can discuss our proposals. :)
[18:08] Moon Adamant: :)
[18:08] Jon Seattle: This is about our ideas concerning citizen participation.
[18:08] Jon Seattle: We are a community of very bright, creative people.
[18:08] Jon Seattle: One of our motivations for being in second life is that it gives us a chance to experiment. To shape our physical surroundings, but also to shape our social, political, and intellectual community.
[18:09] Jon Seattle: We were looking for a way that bright creative people could participate in the development of N’stadt, without having to insist that everyone get involved in the day to day running of the community.
[18:09] Jon Seattle: In many ways direct democracy is easier when it is about plans and not operational decisions. We can focus more on long term issues and preferences and less on personal details.
[18:09] Jon Seattle: The planning festival is a kind of game that results in some level of consent to plans for changing and developing a community.
[18:09] Jon Seattle: People form teams that develop proposals for community development and express these as built exhibits or posters.
[18:09] Jon Seattle: One team might draw up maps, other sample structures and models, a third create a walk-through environment.
[18:09] Jon Seattle: People invest their vote in a proposal and are able to change their vote as the game progresses.
[18:10] Yogeswari Padar: i'm involved in something like this in RL right now
[18:10] Dnate Mars: is this being recorded?
[18:10] Moon Adamant: oops
[18:10] Gwyneth Llewelyn: Uh... good question... do you mind if we get a transcript?
[18:10] Jon Seattle: Oh, yes, we should record.
[18:10] Yogeswari Padar: no prob here
[18:10] Moon Adamant: do you all agree in the transcript?
[18:10] Moon Adamant: i do, for teh record
[18:10] Rubaiyat Shatner: no prob
[18:10] Yogeswari Padar: yes
[18:10] Gwyneth Llewelyn certainly agrees and apologises for interrupting
[18:10] Jon Seattle: I do concent.
[18:10] Jon Seattle: consent
[18:11] Dnate Mars: I will just stay quite unless I want to be recorded
[18:11] Gwyneth Llewelyn: :)
[18:11] SL Boutique Central: You have sold "GUUD Phone (wear it!)" to Lil Carducci.
[18:11] Jon Seattle: :)
[18:11] Jon Seattle: Let me continue.. :)
[18:11] Jon Seattle: People invest their vote in a proposal and are able to change their vote as the game progresses.
[18:12] Jon Seattle: There are two reasons this may be important. One is that a team may change their proposal in response to suggestions. Another is that two or more teams may negotiate to combine proposals.
[18:12] Jon Seattle: The idea is that teams not only compete but also work out differences and together build even better plans for the community.
[18:12] Jon Seattle: There are several advantages to this sort of game:
[18:12] Jon Seattle: 1. It gets people involved in defining their own surroundings, so that they will feel that this is their own creative work.
[18:12] Jon Seattle: 2. It potentially involves us in redeveloping our environment so that the place is responsive to changes in peoples wants and interests.
[18:12] Jon Seattle: 3. It makes us even more democratic and encourages more participation.
[18:13] Jon Seattle: 4. It gets us involved in forming groups that can explore particular topics and interests.
[18:13] Jon Seattle: So that is the end of my prepared remarks.
